Overview
EN ISO 4521:2008 (ISO 4521:2008) specifies requirements and test methods for electrodeposited silver and silver‑alloy coatings intended for electrical, electronic and other engineering applications where the coating serves a non‑decorative, functional purpose. The standard covers performance characteristics (appearance, thickness, porosity, corrosion resistance, electrical and mechanical properties) and includes normative test and sampling procedures. It does not apply to coatings on screw threads or to sheet, strip or wire in the non‑fabricated form. Importantly, the purchaser must specify the condition, finish and surface roughness of the substrate prior to electroplating.
Key Topics
- Scope and application: coatings for engineering (non‑decorative) uses, with exclusions noted.
- Information to be supplied by purchaser: essential data such as substrate condition and any heat‑treatment requirements.
- Requirements: appearance, coating thickness, porosity, composition, adhesion, electrical properties, microhardness, solderability, wear resistance, ductility, anti‑tarnish treatments and freedom from contamination.
- Heat treatments: stress‑relief before plating and hydrogen‑embrittlement relief after plating where applicable.
- Test methods & measurement: standardized methods for thickness measurement (microscopical, coulometric, X‑ray, beta backscatter, profilometric, magnetic), adhesion tests, accelerated corrosion tests and residual salt detection.
- Sampling and annexes: prescriptive sampling procedures and normative annexes covering undercoat requirements, detailed measurement methods, adhesion testing and residual salt determination.
Applications
EN ISO 4521:2008 is used where silver coatings are selected for functional benefits such as:
- Electrical conductivity for connectors, contact surfaces and lead frames.
- Corrosion protection and controlled surface chemistry in electronic assemblies.
- Wear and bearing surfaces where lubrication may be limited.
- Replacement of gold in some lead‑frame applications due to performance versus cost considerations.
Who uses this standard
- Electroplaters and surface‑finishing shops specifying and verifying coating processes.
- OEMs and component manufacturers (electronics, electrical contacts, precision bearings).
- Procurement and quality engineers writing purchase specifications and acceptance criteria.
- Test laboratories performing thickness, adhesion, corrosion and solderability tests.
- Design engineers assessing material compatibility, substrate preparation and service life.
