Overview
EN ISO 8330:2022 - Rubber and plastics hoses and hose assemblies: Vocabulary is an international vocabulary standard adopted by CEN that defines the terms used across the hose industry. The fourth edition (2022) replaces EN ISO 8330:2014 and provides a consistent, authoritative set of definitions for hoses, hose parts, reinforcements, fittings, assembly methods, geometrical properties, mechanical and electrical aspects, production methods, tests and deformations.
This vocabulary standard supports clear communication in specifications, design, testing, procurement and regulatory documentation for rubber and plastics hoses and hose assemblies.
Key topics
The standard organizes terminology into concise subclauses; major topic areas include:
- General terms (hose, hose assembly, hydraulic hose, tubing, operating conditions)
- Hose types by shape, reinforcement and material (e.g., hardwall, softwall, corrugated, spiralled, layflat, pre-shaped)
- Hose parts and components (lining, cover, barb, sleeve, socketshell) and reinforcement elements (braid, helix wire, spiralled wire cord)
- Hose end types and fittings (plain end, male/female fittings, reusable fittings) and methods of assembling (crimping, swaging, etc.)
- Sizes, geometrical properties and bending dimensions (nominal dimensions, bending radius considerations)
- Mechanical properties and tests, including burst and vacuum tests, and operating conditions (pressure, temperature, motion, conveyed fluid)
- Electrical aspects (terminology is referenced; recommended terms for electrical conductivity and resistance are in ISO 8031:2020, Annex A)
- Production methods and tools, and deformations and defects commonly encountered in service
The 2022 edition revised numbering and definitions, added terms (for example: barb, helix wire, tracer yarn, semi-rigid hose) and removed or updated other terms to reflect current industry usage.
Practical applications
- Creating unambiguous product specifications and datasheets for hose manufacturers and suppliers
- Harmonizing test reports and inspection criteria used by laboratories and quality assurance teams
- Improving clarity in engineering drawings, installation instructions and maintenance manuals for design engineers and maintenance personnel
- Supporting procurement and contract language for buyers and regulators to reduce ambiguity and disputes
Who should use this standard
- Hose and hose-assembly manufacturers and designers
- Test laboratories and certification bodies
- OEMs and system integrators in hydraulics, fluid transfer, oil & gas, chemical processing, agriculture and construction
- Standards committees, technical writers and procurement specialists
Related standards
- ISO 8031:2020 - recommended terminology for electrical conductivity and resistance of rubber and plastics hoses (see Annex A)
- ISO 1382:2020 - referenced for the compound definition source
Use EN ISO 8330:2022 when you need consistent, industry-recognized terminology for hoses and hose assemblies to ensure clear communication across design, testing, manufacturing and procurement.
