Abstract

Overview

EN ISO 8989:1998 (ISO 8989:1995) specifies a laboratory method to determine the water miscibility (water tolerance) of liquid phenolic resins. The test quantifies the percentage by mass of water required to produce a persistent turbidity in the resin under controlled conditions. This second edition replaces the first (1988) and revises the procedure to use grade 3 water (ISO 3696) instead of distilled water.

- Record the volume V (ml) of water added.
Result expression: Water miscibility WM (%) = (V / m) × 100, where V is water volume (ml) and m is mass of resin test portion (g). Optionally results can be expressed as ratio 1:x where x = WM/100.
Reporting: Include reference to the standard, resin identification, test conditions and date, and calculated result.
