Overview
ISO 10098:1992 – Wireline diamond core drilling equipment - System CSSK specifies the materials, main dimensions and technical requirements for wireline diamond core drilling components intended for medium-hard to hard formations. The standard covers equipment designed for drilling to depths of 1 200 m to 1 500 m and applies to outer bit diameters 46 mm, 59 mm, 76 mm and 93 mm (with corresponding core diameters from 24 mm to 59 mm). ISO 10098 is compatible with System C equipment (see ISO 8866) and includes normative and informative annexes for design and verification.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and designation
- Defines the CSSK system designation and the set of covered items (drill rods, diamond core bits, reaming shells, core tubes, core lifters and related parts).
- Materials and mechanical properties
- Minimum mechanical properties for manufactured items are specified so components (e.g., tubes, rods, bits) meet required strength and performance levels.
- Dimensions, tolerances and drawings
- Main dimensions and tolerances are provided in tables and figures for each CSSK size (CSSK46, 59, 76, 93). All dimensions are in millimetres.
- Manufacturing and geometric requirements
- Tubes shall be seamless; tube ovality must remain within outer diameter tolerances.
- Tube curvature and rod end curvature are measured and limited; the standard prescribes how to check curvature (rolling/measurement over specified lengths).
- Maximum deviation in wall thickness is controlled.
- Threading and gauges
- Drill-rod threads must be checked using gauges described in Section 2; other threaded parts are to be checked using gauges according to national standards or as specified.
- Quality checks
- Instructions for rolling tests, thread gauging and dimensional verification are included. Annex A is an integral part; Annexes B and C are informative.
Applications
- Standardizes components for wireline diamond core drilling used in:
- Mineral exploration and mining core recovery
- Geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations
- Engineering site investigations where core integrity and interchangeability are required
- Ensures interoperability between CSSK system parts and with System C casings when casing holes are required.
Who should use this standard
- Drilling equipment manufacturers and designers
- Mining and exploration contractors specifying procurement and acceptance criteria
- Quality assurance, inspection and testing personnel
- Standards committees, regulatory bodies and technical purchasers
