The method follows oxygen uptake by aerobic microorganisms in an aqueous medium (test compound as sole carbon source) over up to 28 days and expresses biodegradability as oxygen uptake relative to the theoretical oxygen demand (ThOD) or chemical oxygen demand (COD).
