Overview
SIST ISO 1206:2023 - Rolling bearings - Needle roller bearings with machined rings - Boundary dimensions, geometrical product specifications (GPS) and tolerance values defines the geometric and dimensional framework for needle roller bearings with machined rings. This fifth edition (2023) replaces ISO 1206:2018 and applies to both complete needle roller bearings and bearings without inner ring. It is a machine-element geometry standard within the GPS system and links functional requirements to measurement and verification practice.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Boundary dimensions and chamfers: nominal sizes and maximum chamfer dimensions are specified using standard dimension series (Tables 2–7) derived from ISO 15 and ISO 582.
- Geometrical product specifications (GPS): symbols, specification modifiers and GPS rules are defined (see Table 1 and Figures 1–2) for two-point size, mid-range sizes and other GPS characteristics.
- Tolerance values: normal-class tolerance values and limit deviations from nominal sizes for complete bearings and bearings without inner ring (Section 6).
- Radial internal clearance: guidance on clearance classes and characteristic definitions (Section 7).
- Symbols and terms: mappings to previous editions and GPS terminology (Annex B); note the symbol change ΔFwgn introduced in this edition.
- Measurement and verification: Annex C provides guidelines for measurement techniques and verification methods - aligning specifications with measurement uncertainty practices.
- Informative guidance: Annex A recommends tolerances for shaft raceways used with needle roller bearings without inner ring.
- Normative references and GPS context: the standard references ISO 1101, ISO 5593, ISO 14405‑1, ISO/TS 17863 and follows GPS rules per ISO 8015 and decision rules of ISO 14253‑1 (measurement uncertainty per ISO 14253‑2).
Practical applications
- Ensure interchangeability and consistent fit between needle roller bearings and mating components.
- Provide design engineers with standard boundary dimensions and chamfer limits for CAD, drawings and BOMs.
- Support manufacturing and quality engineers in setting inspection criteria, specifying tolerance classes and planning metrology.
- Aid procurement and OEMs in verifying supplier parts conform to internationally recognized GPS and tolerance values.
- Guide maintenance and retrofitting where replacement bearings (with or without inner rings) must meet defined geometrical limits.
- Bearing manufacturers and tooling designers
- Mechanical design and machine-element engineers
- Quality, metrology and inspection laboratories
- OEMs, procurement teams and maintenance planners specifying replacement parts
