SIST ISO 7001:2023 - Graphical symbols - Registered public information symbols is the fourth edition of the international standard that defines a library of internationally validated public information symbols for use in public signage and wayfinding. The standard is applicable across all locations and sectors accessible to the public, except where sector-specific regulations apply (for example, safety signs and traffic signs on public roads). Symbols are provided as original, scalable designs and may be used alone or together with text to improve comprehension.

- Colour & contrast: Symbols may be reproduced in any colour but must avoid the safety-colour/shape combinations defined in ISO 3864‑1 (to prevent confusion with safety signs). Avoid green/white combinations for arrows to prevent confusion with evacuation signage.
- Negation: Two negation devices are defined - a diagonal negation bar (top-left to bottom-right) for whole-symbol prohibition and a negation cross for negating elements. Negation marks are normally red and must not include a surrounding circle (so as not to resemble safety signs).
- Validation & evolution: Symbols in the standard have been validated by testing methods (ISO 9186 series referenced) or established international use. The standard is maintained electronically via the ISO Online Browsing Platform.
