Overview
EN 29313:1992 (identical to ISO 9313:1989) specifies standard requirements for cooling tubes used in resistance spot welding equipment. The standard defines permissible diameters, cut-off angles and dimensional tolerances, and it establishes rules for designation, materials and marking to ensure interchangeability and reliable coolant flow. The tube end is cut at an angle to promote sufficient water flow to the welding electrode.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose
- Standardizes dimensions and tolerances for cooling tubes for resistance spot welding.
- Ensures compatibility with electrode adaptors and holders.
- Dimensions
- Exact dimensions and tolerances are given in the standard’s figure and table (length I is selectable by agreement between purchaser and manufacturer).
- The tube end must be cut at an angle to ensure adequate coolant flow.
- Types
- Two primary types: Type A (rigid) and Type B (flexible). Dimensions for type B are referenced to those for type A in the standard.
- Materials
- Cooling tubes shall be manufactured from brass or copper to meet thermal and corrosion requirements.
- Designation and marking
- Required designation format: description block, reference to the standard, tube type, outside diameter (mm), and length (mm).
Example designation: Cooling tube ISO 9313 - A - 5 x 50
- Marking on the part omits the description block and standard reference; example: A-5 x 50.
- Reference standards
- EN 29313 / ISO 9313 references related ISO standards for calculating lengths and ensuring fit with electrode adaptors and holders.
Applications
- Designed for manufacturers, suppliers and purchasers of resistance spot welding equipment and accessories.
- Used by:
- Welding-equipment designers and mechanical engineers for specifying compatible cooling tubes.
- Quality control and procurement teams to verify part conformity and interchangeability.
- Maintenance and service technicians selecting replacement cooling tubes to restore coolant flow and electrode cooling.
- Practical benefits:
- Improved compatibility across equipment from different manufacturers.
- Reliable coolant flow performance and extended electrode life through standardized cut-off angles and materials.
- Clear marking and designation simplify inventory and replacement part identification.
