Overview
EN ISO 1401:2016 - "Rubber hoses for agricultural spraying" is a CEN-endorsed adoption of ISO 1401:2016 that specifies design, material and test requirements for flexible rubber hoses used for pressure spraying of agricultural chemicals and fertilizers. The standard covers hoses intended to operate in a temperature range of –10 °C to +60 °C and defines three performance types (A, B, C) by maximum working pressure.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Classification
- Type A: max working pressure 1.0 MPa (10 bar)
- Type B: max working pressure 4.0 MPa (40 bar)
- Type C: max working pressure 6.0 MPa (60 bar)
- Construction and materials
- Inner synthetic rubber lining, textile-fibre reinforcement, and natural or synthetic rubber cover.
- Dimensions & tolerances
- Nominal bores range from 6.3 mm to 25 mm with defined inside-diameter tolerances (e.g., 6.3 mm ±0.75 mm; 25 mm ±1.25 mm).
- Length tolerances as per ISO 1307.
- Minimum thickness
- Types A/B: lining ≥ 1.6 mm; cover ≥ 1.0 mm.
- Type C: lining ≥ 2.0 mm; cover ≥ 1.6 mm.
- Mechanical properties
- Tensile strength (ISO 37): lining ≥ 7.0 MPa, elongation ≥ 200%; cover ≥ 7.0 MPa, elongation ≥ 250%.
- Chemical and ageing resistance
- Immersion testing (ISO 1817) in the actual service fluid: volume increase, tensile and elongation limits after 72 h immersion (maximum volume increase 55%; tensile strength reduction max 50%; elongation reduction max 40%).
- Accelerated ageing (ISO 188): samples aged 72 h at 100 °C; post-ageing property limits are specified in the standard.
- Finished-hose tests
- Hydrostatic testing, bending/flexibility (ISO 10619-1), adhesion (ISO 8033), ozone resistance (ISO 7326), dimensional change and other routine/type tests.
- Quality and compliance
- Clauses on frequency of testing, type tests, production acceptance tests, marking and test reports/certificates.
Applications and users
- Primary use: pressure hoses for agricultural sprayers used to apply pesticides, herbicides and liquid fertilizers.
- Who uses the standard:
- Hose manufacturers and compounders specifying construction and performance.
- Agricultural equipment OEMs and sprayer designers specifying hose assemblies.
- Test laboratories performing compliance and type testing.
- Procurement teams and spec writers requiring documented performance for safety and durability.
- Farmers and contractors seeking compatible, certified replacement hoses.
