Overview
EN ISO 683-4:2018 (adoption of ISO 683-4:2016) specifies the technical delivery requirements for free-cutting steels used for mechanical purposes. It applies to semi-finished products (blooms, billets, slabs), bars and wire rod made from the free-cutting steel grades listed in the standard’s tables and supplied in the treatment conditions given for product types. The standard covers three groups of free-cutting steels:
- not intended for heat treatment,
- suitable for case-hardening, and
- suitable for quenching and tempering.
EN ISO 683-4:2018 is a CEN-adopted version of ISO 683-4:2016 and works alongside the general delivery requirements in ISO 404. Free-cutting steels are commonly delivered as bright bars (see ISO 683-18 for bright products).
Key Topics and Requirements
The standard defines the core technical topics and purchaser requirements without prescribing proprietary process details:
- Classification and designation of free-cutting steel grades (see Table 2 in the standard).
- Information to be supplied by the purchaser, including mandatory ordering information and options/supplementary requirements (ordering examples provided).
- Manufacturing and heat-treatment conditions for each product form, with normal and particular delivery conditions described.
- Chemical composition, hardness and mechanical properties requirements and limits for each grade.
- Machinability and weldability considerations for free-cutting steels intended for mechanical use.
- Grain size, internal soundness and surface quality requirements for semi-finished and finished products.
- Shape, dimensions and tolerances, plus inspection, testing methods and frequency (chemical analysis, hardness and mechanical tests, retests).
- Marking and traceability rules for cast and product identification.
- Provisions for supplementary or special requirements by agreement between purchaser and supplier.
Practical Applications and Users
EN ISO 683-4:2018 is used by:
- steel producers and mills specifying delivery conditions for free-cutting steels,
- purchasing and procurement teams issuing material orders for bars, wire rod and semi-finished products,
- manufacturers of machined components and turned parts that rely on consistent machinability and mechanical properties,
- quality and inspection departments implementing test regimes and acceptance criteria,
- standards writers and compliance auditors referencing harmonized European/ISO requirements.
Typical applications include turned and machined mechanical parts, bright bar components, and other precision components where free-machining characteristics are required.
