Overview
IEC 62766-1:2017 - Consumer terminal function for access to IPTV and open Internet multimedia services - Part 1: General - defines the common elements and the overall structure of the IEC 62766 series. It provides the roadmap and scope for the family of standards that standardize the user‑to‑network interface (UNI) for consumer terminals to access IPTV and open Internet multimedia services over both managed (QoS‑assured) and unmanaged networks.
This Part 1 document:
- Describes the series structure and relationships between Parts 2–8 (media formats, adaptive streaming, metadata, protocols, application environments, protection and profiles).
- Defines normative references, terms and definitions, and high‑level architecture elements such as reference points (UNI/HNI) and residential network functional entities.
Key topics and technical scope
Part 1 does not specify low‑level protocol parameters itself but organizes and references the technical topics handled by the series. Key topics include:
- User-to-network interface (UNI) concepts for managed vs. open Internet access and QoS considerations.
- Series structure and normative references to Parts 2–8 (e.g., media formats, HTTP adaptive streaming, content metadata, protocols, declarative/procedural application environments, authentication/content protection, profiles).
- Terminology and classification: standardized terms, abbreviations and definitions used across the series.
- High-level architecture and functional entities: Open IPTV terminal functional entity (OITF), Internet gateway (IG), access gateway (AG), and related reference points.
- Supporting material: annexes provide XML schema guidance and high‑level architectural diagrams that map functional entities to UNI reference points.
Practical applications and target users
IEC 62766-1 is valuable for anyone involved in delivering or implementing IPTV and Internet multimedia services:
- Device manufacturers (set‑top boxes, smart TVs, consumer gateways) - to align terminal behavior with the series.
- Software developers building client middleware, web/TV apps, or adaptive streaming clients.
- Service providers and system integrators designing service platforms and UNI interfaces for managed or open networks.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies creating conformance test suites based on the IEC 62766 family.
- Standards architects and product managers seeking a unified view of related technical parts before consulting detailed parts for implementation requirements.
