Overview - IEC 62766-4-1:2017 (Protocols for IPTV and Internet multimedia)
IEC 62766-4-1:2017 defines the protocols used by consumer terminals to access IPTV and open internet multimedia services. The standard focuses on protocol-level interfaces in the reference architecture (see IEC 62766-1:2017 Annex B), covering:
- UNI interfaces (between consumer domain and network/service provider domains)
- HNI interfaces (between functional entities inside the consumer network domain)
- Interfaces to external systems in the consumer domain, including DLNA networks
This part (Part 4-1) provides the protocol specifications and reference points for interoperability of consumer gateways, integrated gateways (IG), application gateways (AG) and related devices.
Key topics and technical requirements
The document specifies protocol usage and message handling for a broad set of services and infrastructure functions. Major technical topics include:
- HTTP and REST-style messaging for service control and HNI–IGI interactions
- SIP / SIP‑SDP for session management (multicast/unicast streaming, caller services, session transfer)
- RTSP for unicast streaming and playback control (including forced play‑out and nPVR interactions)
- RTP / RTCP for media transport, payload formats, monitoring, and fast channel change (FCC)
- IGMP / multicast control for multicast content distribution and pay‑per‑view workflows
- UPnP / DLNA discovery and device descriptions for consumer-domain service discovery and content sharing
- DHCP / UDP usage for network attachment, option handling and low‑level transport
- Application-level features: content download, purchase/payment flows, parental control, bookmarking, local & network PVR (nPVR), presence, instant messaging and content sharing
The standard defines reference points, message types, and protocol options (e.g., HTTP option for HNI–IGI), and provides guidance for error recovery, protocol converters and system infrastructure functions.
Practical applications - who uses this standard
IEC 62766-4-1 is intended for anyone implementing or integrating IPTV / internet multimedia consumer equipment and services:
- Device manufacturers (set‑top boxes, residential gateways, smart TVs, IG/AG vendors)
- Service providers and network operators deploying IPTV, multicast/unicast streaming or nPVR services
- Software developers building middleware, session managers and service control applications
- Test labs and certification bodies validating interoperability across UNI, HNI and external interfaces
- System integrators and network architects defining end‑to‑end service stacks
Adoption of this standard helps ensure interoperability, predictable behavior across providers, and compatibility with consumer‑domain ecosystems (DLNA/UPnP).
