Overview
ISO 13194:2011 - "Box pallets - Principal requirements and test methods" is an international, performance-based standard that defines terminology, principal requirements and laboratory test methods for box pallets (including post pallets and cage pallets) of all materials. It covers pallets designed to be stacked and handled by forklift trucks or pallet trucks and applies to the pallet structure only - not to the pallet contents. Tank and silo pallets (ISO 445) are excluded.
Key Topics
- Scope and definitions: Types of box pallets (fixed, collapsible, demountable, post and cage pallets), nominal load and nominal stacking load.
- Materials and conditioning: No material limitation (metal, plastic, wood, composites, paper-based). Conditioning and test duration follow sensitivity of the most critical material.
- Dimensional and handling requirements: Bottom access for forklifts/pallet trucks per ISO 6780 / EN 13382; pallet height should not exceed twice the smallest base dimension for stability.
- Performance tests and methods:
- Bending (racking) test: Intended to determine bending stiffness under a uniformly distributed test load (test load = 1.5 × nominal load). Deflection limits: typically ≤ 2% under full load and ≤ 0.7% after relaxation.
- Stacking test: Verifies resistance to block-stacking effects and local loads. Standard test load calculation: test load = 1.5 × n × (tare weight + nominal load). For collapsible pallets a specific formula uses tare weight only. Compression limits: ≤ 2% under full load and residual compression ≤ 1% after relaxation.
- Vertical impact (drop) test: Assesses resistance to vertical shocks; performed with the pallet loaded to its nominal load (not compulsory for metal pallets).
- Marking and test reporting: Manufacturers should provide or mark nominal load and nominal stacking load; test report content is specified.
Applications
ISO 13194 is used to:
- Demonstrate box pallet performance for materials handling, warehousing and transport.
- Specify and verify pallet designs (fixed, collapsible, demountable, post, cage) for suppliers, OEMs and logistics buyers.
- Support procurement, quality control and compliance testing programs in supply chain, packaging and transport industries.
- Help engineers and packaging professionals select pallet types and design test protocols for storage, stacking and impact resistance.
Who uses it: pallet manufacturers, packaging engineers, logistics managers, test laboratories and specifiers involved in pallet selection, design and verification.
