Overview
ISO 7796:1985 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), specifically by Technical Committee ISO/TC 83, which focuses on sports and recreational equipment. This standard establishes clear and precise measuring conditions for the geometrical characteristics of alpine and cross-country skis. By specifying the sampling, conditioning, tolerance limits, and test report requirements, ISO 7796:1985 ensures consistent and reliable ski dimension measurements across the industry, supporting manufacturers, testers, and regulatory bodies.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
ISO 7796 applies to the geometric measurement of skis without any fittings or ancillary parts. It covers both alpine skis and cross-country skis, with dimensional units specified in millimeters.
-
Measurement Conditions
Measurements must be performed on finished skis conditioned for at least two hours in a standard atmosphere (23°C / 50% relative humidity) as per ISO 554. This conditioning standardizes environmental factors affecting ski material properties.
-
Dimension Tolerances
The standard defines tolerance limits for key ski dimensions including:
- Length: Alpine skis ±30 mm, cross-country skis ±10 mm
- Width: ±1.5 mm for both ski types
- Thickness: ±0.5 mm
- Height and bottom camber with specified tolerances to ensure dimensional accuracy
-
Sampling and Conditioning
Skis measured must be free of bindings or additional parts, representing the finished product. Conditioning prepares the skis for consistent measurement outcomes.
-
Test Report Requirements
The test report generated must detail:
- Reference to ISO 7796:1985
- Complete ski identification (brand, model, size, manufacturer registration)
- Any deviations from the standard along with reasons for such deviations
Applications
ISO 7796:1985 is essential for:
- Ski Manufacturers: Enables standardized dimensional verification to ensure product quality and conformity to industry norms.
- Quality Assurance & Testing Laboratories: Provides a clear protocol for measuring ski geometry, facilitating consistent and comparable results.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports adherence to safety and dimension standards in international markets.
- Retail and Consumer Confidence: Accurate geometry measurement helps maintain performance specifications, thereby enhancing consumer trust.
- Research and Development: Useful in designing new skis and comparing prototypes under regulated measurement conditions.
