Overview
EN ISO 12460-3:2023 - Wood-based panels - Determination of formaldehyde release - Part 3: Gas analysis method (ISO 12460-3:2023) specifies a laboratory gas analysis method for accelerated measurement of formaldehyde release from uncoated and coated wood-based panels. Adopted by CEN (superseding the 2020 edition), the standard describes a controlled-chamber test in which air drawn from the chamber is passed through absorbers and the captured formaldehyde is quantified to give emissions expressed in mg/m2·h. The procedure is also suitable for related materials such as edge bands, floor coverings, foams, foils, laminated, veneered and coated wood products.
Key topics and requirements
- Test principle: Specified test piece area placed inside a controlled chamber (temperature, humidity, airflow, pressure) - chamber air is sampled continuously through gas wash bottles filled with water to absorb formaldehyde.
- Analytical methods: Photometric or fluorimetric determination of formaldehyde in absorber solutions; the 2023 revision adds laser spectroscopy as an additional analytical option.
- Reagents: Analytical-grade reagents (examples in the standard include acetylacetone, ammonium acetate, commercial formaldehyde solutions, iodine, sodium thiosulphate, NaOH, H2SO4, starch). Premixed reagents (see ISO 12460-4) are referenced as optional.
- Apparatus: Key components specified include gas wash bottles, air pump or mass flow controller, dust/formaldehyde filters, chamber (diameter 90–100 mm; internal volume (4 000 ± 200) ml), heating/thermostat, flow measurement, pressure and temperature monitors, and inert test piece holders.
- Sampling & preparation: Procedures for sampling, cutting and selecting test pieces for factory production control, type testing or dispute cases are covered.
- Results & reporting: Calculation methods to express formaldehyde release (gas analysis value and emission report value), moisture content determination and required test report content.
Applications and users
- Intended for testing laboratories, manufacturers of wood-based panels and coated products, certification bodies, regulators and product safety teams for:
- Type testing and product development (R&D)
- Factory production control and quality assurance
- Demonstrating compliance with formaldehyde emission limits and indoor air quality requirements
- Assessing emissions from auxiliary materials (edge bands, laminates, foams)
- Useful when specifying product performance in procurement, labeling, CE/national conformity, or indoor air quality assessments.
