Overview
EN ISO 21853:2020 - Kite boarding: Release system - Safety requirements and test methods specifies minimum safety requirements and test methods for kite release systems used in kite boarding. The standard applies to release systems that are intentionally operated by the user or another person to reduce kite pull and disconnect the user from the kite. Developed by ISO/TC 83 in cooperation with CEN/TC 136 and stakeholders such as the Global Kitesports Association, the document aims to reduce risks associated with this extreme sport.
Key topics
The standard covers both design and verification aspects of kite release systems, including:
- Functional scope - systems that reduce pulling force and disconnect the user intentionally.
- Safety requirements - general safety, strength, design, handling, and behavior during release.
- Human factors - triggering force, release force, duration of release, and reachability.
- Environmental considerations - additional requirements and test conditions for cold, wet, and sandy environments.
- Information & marking - user’s manual content, product marking, and durability of markings.
- Test methods - apparatus, test environments (dry/clean, dry sand, water with sand, cold/wet), sampling, preparation, and specific procedures such as strength and durability tests.
- Ancillary checks - sharp edge assessment and required test reporting.
Keywords: EN ISO 21853:2020, kite boarding, release system, safety requirements, test methods, strength test, cold and wet conditions.
Practical applications
Manufacturers, test houses and conformity assessment bodies use EN ISO 21853:2020 to:
- Design and validate safe release systems that meet recognized international minimum requirements.
- Specify test programs during product development to confirm function under realistic conditions (sand, water, cold).
- Prepare compliant user manuals and product markings addressing handling and emergency release.
- Support product certification, procurement specifications, and quality control checks.
- Inform training materials for instructors, safety officers and retailers about safe operation and expected behavior of release systems.
Keywords: kite release system testing, product validation, kiteboarding safety, equipment certification.
Who should use this standard
- Kite equipment manufacturers and designers
- Independent test laboratories and conformity assessment organizations
- Instructors, trainers and kiteboarding schools
- Product safety engineers, regulators and procurement teams
- Industry associations such as the Global Kitesports Association
